Reply with quote | #1 | With having done some reading on this "stimulus" I think I have arrived on a better method to save people from foreclosure, using the governments own spending logic. Follow along with me, as this may seem confusing and illogical...
First let's do some comparisons. The country does not have any money, they have to borrow or print more. People don't have money to pay mortgages, they too may need to borrow, though it's illegal for them to print more. Secondly, the government is going to spend billions of dollars, claiming that it will create jobs and cause a recovery within the economy. Some of this money will buy new furniture, cars and computers for government offices. Many of those defaulting on mortgages may also need new furniture, cars and computers, though lack money to do so.
You can see where I'm going..... Rather than bailing out financial institutions, and allowing people to refinance, the government should be giving people money to buy new furniture, cars and computers. After all, one must conclude that if the government believes that their purchases will spur recovery, why not do this on a larger scale? Just imagine, this is more beneficial. As these purchases will create, or at the very least, preserve jobs, it will certainly have more of a positive impact by putting money into the hands of those with needs. In turn, these purchases secure jobs for those with needs as well. In the long run, using the governments same logic, failed as it may be, this will open doors for those with troubled mortgages by creating more meaningful employment opportunities; thus allowing them to become more financially stable. Additionally, since this is likely to be less costly in the long run, while having a more positive impact on the economy we should not bail out mortgages, but allow home owners to borrow more to buy furniture, cars and computers. After all, if this is good enough for the government, it must be even better for the public to participate in as well.
So, what other areas of this stimulus should be dumped from the government and shifted to the public? What other illogical, and irresponsible, ideas do you have?

You are confusing the stimulus package, and TARP funding. They are not the same. TARP was originally presented By the BUSH administration to help out people with failing mortgages, yet when given the money the Bush team requested that no accountability be attached to the funds and they gave the cash away without helping a SINGLE homeowner. To date, nobody can account for where it all went. Obama has not yet handed out any TARP funding! |

Reply with quote | #3 | ChrisB. Yes, you are right, I am blurring the line here, using TARP in conjunction w/ stimulus. The obamination did use TARP money though..... He requested it be made available to him upon taking office. It is also not only Bush that called for these funds to be doled out w/o a means to track its use; it was also Congress that passed a flawed bill without reading in. Yes, the first of many ill-advised actions Congress has taken in the past year.
